News From Around the NHL

-The Philadelphia Flyers have reached an agreement on a contract extension with young center Mike Richards. The deal is for a lengthy 12 years, worth 69 million dollars. His cap hit will be 5.75 mil a year. Richards is having a career year with 14 goals and 21 assists.

-With this move the Flyers have yet another long contract, Daniel Briere has an 8 year deal, also forward Scott Hartnell has a 6 year deal, along with defensemen Kimmo Timonen.

-The Anaheim Ducks made a very curious trade by shipping playmaking center Andy McDonald to the St. Louis Blues for Doug Weight, prospect Michal Birner and a 7th round pick. Both Weight and McDonald have been struggling, but at 35 Weight has less upside than the speedy playmaker McDonald. Anaheim is expected to make another trade in order to get returning captain Scott Niedermayer under the salary cap.
